Prayer requests
This is an email I sent out to a number of people who had specifically said they would pray for our group during this trip. Read on to get a better feel of what we're doing...
Thank you for volunteering your time to pray for our group. It means a lot to us, and will probably have a greater effect on us and those we’re serving than we’ll ever know. Here’s the low-down of what’s happening:
-We are 26 people in total – about a dozen from UBC plus another dozen coming from various other UCM groups in BC (Uvic, Malaspina, UBC-O, etc), plus two leaders.
May 1st (Thur)
Leave Vancouver Airport at 6:30, transfer in Seattle and arrive in San Diego by noon.
Renting two vans and driving down the coast to Vicente Guerrero on the Baja Peninsula, Mexico. Arrive by six o’clock.
May 2-7 (Fri-Wed)
Build houses in Vicente Guerrero.
A guy called John Haff has started a ministry of providing lodging for groups that come down and do humanitarian work. We will stay at the lodge that he has built in dorm-style rooms. We even have flush toilets! We will have breakfast there and make packed lunches to eat at the construction site. Dinners are cooked by a local woman and will be at the lodge as well.
We are partnering with Becky and her brother Charles, who are missionaries serving in Vicente Guerrero. They are the ones who decide what families need a house the most and who buy materials and hire contractors. The plan was to originally build one house and do some other activities as well (soccer camps, helping out at an orphanage) but Becky has found two families who are both in great need and so now we will be focusing solely on building TWO houses. The families are:
-Francisca and family (a 2 year-old and 5 year-old).
-Margarita and family (five children - 5 months to 12 years)
Becky has been the primary contact and so doesn’t know much about the husbands who are always working in the fields when she is visiting.
May 8th (Thur)
Drive back to San Diego, stopping in Ensenada on the way back. Arrive in San Diego by dinnertime.
May 9th (Fri)
One day stop-over to sleep and relax. Plans still up in the air – possibly San Diego Zoo or Santa Monica Beach.
May 10th (Sat)
Fly back to Vancouver, arriving home at 5:30.
Some specific prayer requests:
-Mateja, one of the students from UBC who is currently feeling sick. Pray for quick healing and not too much trouble while we travel tomorrow.
-James and Matt, our leaders, who will be driving the vans and are responsible for the group.
-That we would bond quickly as a team.
-The members of the team who have no construction experience. That they would pick it up quickly and not feel intimidated.
-Patience for everyone as we cope with ‘Mexican time”. Efficiency or speed is not always the top priority there.
-Flexibility for everyone as we deal with unexpected challenges and changes.
-That we would take advantage of whatever possibility we have to interact with the locals to bless them and share the Gospel.
-That the Lord would specifically prepare the hearts of the two families we’re building a house for.
We will have little to no Internet access on the trip, but I will make sure to send out another email when I get back.
